Chapter Fourteen

Normally, road trips felt like they took forever. The few times I’d traveled by car or plane with Tyler had felt like time had stood still. Granted, he would ignore me, and the only times he’d speak to me was when I’d do something he couldn’t stand; like breathing too loud, chewing too loud, or my facial reactions not being ladylike. In other words, near-constant criticism.

So when we rolled into the neighboring woods and stopped at a pull-off in what had felt like minutes since leaving, my mental state hadn’t improved, and I was about to face my childhood home of no laughter, no love, and self-hatred. I’d grown up feeling, if I wasn’t perfect, which I never was, I didn’t deserve love and it was all my fault. Even though I’d learned otherwise, being here made me feel like the little girl I used to be.

Hey. Donovan took my hand in the backseat of Titan’s car. Are you okay?

No. My mind raced with the endless possibilities of what we’d find, increasing my anxiety. But I will be. The stench of a lie didn’t fill the air, making me feel better. I actually believed it, which shocked me.

“Titan, you need to stay put.” He wouldn’t enjoy me telling him what to do. “Tyler will rush home, and we don’t want your scent to give us away.”

His hands clutched the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. “And just leave my mate and you to go in there without me?”

My heart warmed at his words. He was concerned for me, and that softened me toward him. When we’d first met, he’d been growly and protective of my mom, but we’d started to come around to one another.

“Oh, stop.” Mom smacked his arm. “We both know she’s right. If Tyler even gets a whiff of where we’re staying, it’s all over. And we aren’t going in alone. Donovan, Roxy, and Axel are coming with us, and Egan and Naida will be outside as backup.”

I’m glad Tyler knows I’m alive. Donovan opened the back door and climbed out. Otherwise, you’d have my ass back here with him. He grabbed the two gallons of gasoline we’d brought to ensure we took down the whole room and fast. We couldn’t stick around and risk getting caught.

That was true. I’d do anything to protect him just like he would for me. I’d rather him still not know, but that’s not an option. I followed his direction and got out of the car.

Lillith walked around the van and faced me. “What’s the plan?”

I scanned the group standing before me. “Roxy, Axel, Mom, Donovan, Egan, Naida, and I will go to the house. Then the wolves will go inside while Egan and Naida stand guard outside.”

Katherine frowned. “What are we supposed to do?”

“Stay here.” I understood they wanted to be part of the action, but it would cause more problems. “And be ready in case we need you to come get us.”

“No.” Lillith shook her head. “That’s not happening.
